For the past several years, my paintings have featured animals in imaginary landscapes. I adapt creatures from the medieval art and architecture I have encountered in travels overseas when I filled my sketchbooks with scenes from frescoes, stonework and manuscripts. Populating my paintings on panel with such beasts has opened up rich possibilities for narrative and for metaphor, as in solo exhibitions over the past several years exploring themes of war and peace, Paradise and the Fall. Under the imprint The Hand in Glove Press, I have published three artist’s books which also refer to art history. The newest volume, “Seeing and Believing, A Traveler’s Sketchbook”, began with a 2014 trip focused on central France’s Romanesque sites. Red Butte Press will soon publish “Stranger and Stranger”, a letterpress bestiary composed of my creatures alongside the works of my long-time collaborator, and fellow University of Utah professor, the poet Katharine Coles.
