For the past several years, my paintings have featured animals in imaginary landscapes. I adapt creatures from medieval art and architecture I encounter in my travels overseas, when I fill sketchbooks with scenes from frescoes, stonework and manuscripts. Red Butte Press recently published Stranger and Stranger, a letterpress bestiary composed of my creatures alongside the works of my long-time collaborator, and fellow University of Utah professor, the poet Katharine Coles. Under my imprint The Hand in Glove Press, I have published three artist’s books. The newest volume, Seeing and Believing, A Traveler’s Sketchbook, began with a 2014 trip focused on central France’s Romanesque sites; my next project, on hold due to pandemic travel restrictions, will take me to Spain in search for stimuli.

My show, Elsewhere, paintings on panel, opens at Salt Lake City’s Phillips Gallery, March 18 and will remain on view through April 8.
